A Beginning and an End (Ukraine 2016 #1)

A Beginning and an End (Ukraine 2016 #1)

I choose to start the photographic documentation of my trip to Ukraine with this shot from above Amsterdam, a common layover destination when traveling from the US to various cities in Europe.

This beautiful sunrise as seen from the window seat of the airplane - I have always sat next to the window since I was a kid, and still do to this day - marks the beginning of what had become the most significant trip of my life to date.

I have traveled to over 20 counties and countless US states, yet I knew that coming back to reconnect with a part of my past of which I do not even have many memories, would be different than any other trip on which I have embarked.

It has been nearly 30 years since my family left the former Soviet Union to start a new life in America, and during which time, I have never returned to this part of the world.

It is my pleasure to present to you 10 days in Ukraine from the perspective of a foreigner with a long-lost familiarity and longing to connect with this beautiful part of the world, its architecture, cities, and most of all, people.

This sunrise for me was the beginning of a personally significant journey to Ukraine, as well as a photographically significant one.

And, likewise, it marks the end of a 30 year period during which I have grown into an adult, and have increasingly been yearning for connection with who I am and where I am from.

A Beginning and an End.

Location: Somewhere over Amsterdam, Netherlands, my last stop before setting foot on Ukranian soil.
